INCLUSION AND INNOVATION AT HOBARTVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOL

Shadow Assistant Minister for Schools, Andrew Giles joined Member for Macquarie Susan Templeman to visit Hobartville Public School during Education Week.

Ms Templeman and Mr Giles met with students from Hobartville’s support unit, which caters for close to 40 children with special needs, including Vice Captain, Ambrose Mathie and Bella-Rose White. They also met with Stage 1 student, Levi Douglass, who is currently learning to read and write Braille.

“I have been visiting schools across Australia and this was the first time I’ve seen Braille taught this way,” Mr Giles said. “It was very impressive.”

“It is so important that students are provided an environment that gives them the best opportunity to succeed,” he said.

“It is great to see the positive impacts on the whole school community when inclusion is made a priority.”

Ms Templeman said “Education Week always provides parents, grandparents and carers with a wonderful opportunity to get a feel for how the children in their lives spend more than 40 weeks of the year.

“And it was wonderful for our Shadow Minister for Schools to see first-hand how inclusive education is made a priority at Hobartville Public School,” Ms Templeman said.

“It was a delight to meet with Levi, Ambrose and Bella and I thank them and their dedicated teachers and support staff for sharing part of their day with us,” she said.

“When a school has the appropriate infrastructure, teachers and support staff, the kids are the winners,” Ms Templeman said.
